(New York-WABC, October 7, 2005) - There's encouraging news in the fight against breast cancer. Researchers say a low fat diet can help prevent a reccurance.

Now, studying a large group of women, researchers have found that a very low fat diet can reduce a women's risk for cancer recurrence as much as adding a new drug to their treatment.

Dr. Larry Norton, Memorial Sloan-Kettering: "I used to tell people there's no reason not to eat a low fat diet. Now I'm telling people there is a concrete reason to eat a low fat diet."

A simple frappachino or mochachino, anything that has been made with whole milk or with whipped cream could get you beyond 30 grams. Those drinks have 25, 50, 30 grams - but what we would call a medium size muffin to the rest of us looks significant. On average it's not so large, could have 30 grams of fat in there.

The reason for the protection? A very low fat diet probably means weight loss, which may protect against recurrence. It may also cut down on hormones made by fat cells that promote cancer growth.

Joan Stolleman, Breast Cancer Survivor: "And I thought 'Isn't this wonderful? I'm eating healthy and I'm losing weight. How painless is this?' And I just found that that I felt good, that I was eating very well."
