CHICAGO, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Over 400 oncology professionals -- including physicians, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and pharmacists-attended the opening of the First Annual Chicago Supportive Oncology Conference this morning at the Hotel Intercontinental in Chicago, Illinois.

The conference, which was designed to present attendees with the latest clinical data and best practices for providing state-of-the-art supportive care to patients living with cancer, will last three days, beginning today and ending Saturday, October 8. The conference is an accredited educational activity for the attendees, and its faculty is comprised of over 40 oncology experts from the leading cancer centers in the United States, including the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center in Chicago, the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, and many others.

"Historically, cancer treatment began in the area of supportive care simply because we couldn't offer much in the way of a cure for these patients," said Dr. Jamie Von Roenn, Professor of Medical Oncology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Chairperson of the Chicago Supportive Oncology Conference, in her opening remarks. "Then the curative aspects of treatment improved, and the focus shifted away from managing patient symptoms and side effects of first-line treatment for their disease. This conference is a product of the efforts to integrate supportive care into the overall treatment of the patient with cancer."

Educational sessions during the conference will focus on pain management in the patient with cancer; the management of emesis, mucositis, and involuntary weight loss; the improvement of caregiver communication skills; and the management of symptoms and treatment side effects in specific tumors sites, such as the breasts, gastrointestinal tract, lungs, prostate, and head and neck.

The conference shares its overall mission with The Journal of Supportive Oncology, a clinical journal whose major purpose is the publication of articles and original research relating to practical management issues in the palliative and supportive care of cancer patients. The journal is sent to over 29,000 oncology physicians and nurses in the United States, and is indexed in Index Medicus/MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Chemical Abstracts. Highlights from the Chicago Supportive Oncology Conference will appear in the February 2006 issue of The Journal of Supportive Oncology.
