Five Mulvane High School sophomores gathered Sunday night in the school's weight room to talk about their teammates and friends who died over the weekend and to prepare themselves for a tough week ahead.

With the shock of the boys' deaths still so fresh, they shared stories about Sam Keys, 16, and Kyle Adams, 15, who both died Saturday morning after the vehicle they were in crashed into a utility pole on a dirt road near the Sumner County line.

"Sam did bring us up," Springer said. Keys would offer words of encouragement to the team's freshman players after making a bad play or when the team wasn't playing so well.

At the beginning of the school year, Mulvane dedicated its season to Emily "Emmy Sue" Rocha, a freshman team manager who died of leukemia in September.
