Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Nikolai Khabibulin made 29 saves to lead the Chicago Blackhawks to a 5-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues at the United Center.

"We have a young team," said Savard. "We had great goaltending that gave us a chance to win. These guys should be confident and continue to be confident."

St. Louis goaltender Curtis Sanford allowed one goal on three shots and left the game in the first period with a leg injury and did not return. Manny Legace replaced the injured Sanford and finished with 25 saves.

Chicago scored first to take a 1-0 lead at 6:15 of the opening period. Patrick Sharp fired a wrister wide of the net but on the shot, Sanford fell awkwardly to the ice and stayed down. Jeff Hamilton scooped the disc up behind the cage and with Sanford down and in obvious pain, skated out in front and easily deposited the puck into the open net.

Sanford continued to remain down following the goal and was helped off the ice by the St. Louis training and medical staff as Legace came into the game.

Chicago quickly greeted Legace with a goal scoring 18 seconds after Hamilton's tally. Tuomo Ruutu quickly fired a snap shot from the low slot that sailed over Legace's right shoulder to make it 2-0.

The Blackhawks went up 3-0 with 7:46 left in the middle session. Tony Salmelainen deflected a shot from the slot by Duncan Keith past a screened Legace.

A power-play goal 34 seconds into the final frame got St. Louis on the board and made it 3-1. From the point, Wideman fired a heavy slap shot that saw the puck make its way through a sea of players in front and through the legs of Khabibulin.

St. Louis pulled to within 3-2 with 7:20 remaining in the third period. Keith Tkachuk's shot from the right side of the crease slipped behind Khabibulin and with the puck not over the goal line, Guerin raced in from the slot and jammed the disc home.
