On Saturday, those players made their vow come true with a 34-0 victory over Tucson Sunnyside at University of Phoenix Stadium. It capped a perfect 14-0 season that began with a decisive victory over Mesa Mountain View, one of next week's Class 5A Division I finalists.

"I really can't describe how this feels, other than that it is the end of a really long journey," said Taylor, his eyes moist and red from all the emotion. "I have so much respect for these players and what they have done."

Centennial had a 7-0 lead at halftime, but any thoughts that Sunnyside (11-3) had of coming back evaporated when Centennial scored on all three of its third-quarter possessions for a 27-0 lead.

Centennial's defense, meanwhile, held Sunnyside to just 33 yards in the second half. Junior running back Jovan Stevenson was one of the few bright spots with 103 yards on 17 carries for the game.

The first Centennial score in the third quarter came on a 30-yard pass from junior quarterback Scott Burgett to Jarrell Barbour. Burgett later connected with Warren Johnson for a 61-yard TD.

Burgett also scored on a 5-yard run later in the third and hit Alston Umuolo for a 9-yard TD with 9:16 left in the game. Burgett was 12 of 22 for 252 yards.

"I think we might have come out and underestimated them a little in the first half," Burgett said. "Coach told us at halftime that if we wanted to win this thing that we needed to come out focused in the second half, play like we're capable of, and that's what we did."

"This feels great, man," Hughes said. "The line has blocked great all season. When they put Tom in there . . . he's a big bruiser, and it's his job to kill 'em."
