BOYS SWIMMING: The Broncos lost to Westminster 201-114 in a dual meet and swept a tri-meet, scoring 253 points to top Norcross (203) and Peachtree Ridge (173) last week. Top Broncos performers were Danny Nguyen, Dean Hupman, Zach Lopez, Brandon Clay, Mark Dunn, Sean Dixon and Zhan Tan. Brookwood produced nine new state qualifying times and improved on nine previous qualifying times.
GIRLS SWIMMING: Brookwood beat Westminster 190-125 in the dual meet and scored 295 to sweep Peachtree Ridge (209) and Norcross (128). Brookwood was led by Jana Mangimelli, Abby Wilhelm, Catherine Hanley, Alma Lopez, Haley Holcombe, Carly Egan and Kristen Clemmons. Brookwood earned eight new qualifying times and improved on 10 previous qualifying times.
SWIMMING: Event winners for Duluth at the tri-meet with North Gwinnett and South Gwinnett: Boys —- Blake Herrington, 50 freestyle (23.58 seconds), 100 breaststroke (1:05.85, state qualifying time); Jeremy Eaves, 100 butterfly (56.76, state time); 200 freestyle relay, Harrington, Jonathan Leo, Zack Simonini, Alan Carroll (1:34.79, state time). Girls —- Hailey White, 200 freestyle (1:56.06, state time), 500 freestyle (5:17, state time), 400 freestyle relay, Lenora Bryant, Anita Patrick, Rebecca Alvarez, White (3:55.83, state qualifying time). GIRLS BASKETBALL: The Wildcats improved to 1-1 in Region 7-AAAAA by beating Forsyth Central 62-44 on Friday. Mykala Walker scored 11 points, and Ravven Brown and Daphne Adebayo each had 10.
WRESTLING: Grayson defeated McIntosh 43-33 in the final to win the Comet Classic Saturday in Snellville. Grayson, which is 13-0 in dual matches, went 7-0 over the two-day event, defeating Loganville 67-10, Shiloh 67-12, Mount Zion 78-6, Social Circle 65-18 and 72-11, and South Gwinnett 47-30. Grayson trailed 33-31 then got pins from Tony West and Drew Harris in the final two matches to beat McIntosh. Grayson indivdual records for the tournament: Tucker Kreis, 103 pounds, 7-0; Ben Hulsey, 112, 7-0; Travis Moon, 119, 7-0; Matt Casciano, 130, 3-2; Wes Warwick, 135, 6-1; Chris Hamner, 140, 5-1; Tony West, 145, 7-0; Drew Harris, 152, 5-1; Dustin Unkle, 160, 6-1; Nathan Swanson, 171, 5-0; Jeremy Jones, 189, 5-0; Michael Dixon, 215, 5-2; Jay Chatham, 285, 3-4.
GIRLS BASKETBALL: The Lions improved to 3-0 with a 62-48 win over Fellowship Christian on Saturday. Meredith Montgomery scored 21 points, Courtney Odum had 17 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, and Lizzie Cohen added 12 points. Hebron also won its region opener, 70-47 over Towns County on Friday, as Britt Pecht scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Montgomery hit four 3-pointers and finished with 22 points, and Odum had 14 points and five assists.
GIRLS BASKETBALL: The Hawks improved to 5-1 overall with Saturday's 51-40 win at Peachtree Ridge. Porsha Porter had 11 points, six rebounds, three steals and three assists. Moneshia Simmons had 10 points and four rebounds.
SWIMMING: The boys finished second and the girls third in a tri-meet Saturday with Brookwood and Peachtree Ridge. Boys who clocked state-qualifying times: 200 medley relay (Kevin Spiwak, Andrew Feeney, Scott Aron and Scott Sternad); 200 freestyle relay (Spiwak, Feeney, Aron and Sternad; new school record); Aron, 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle; Spiwak, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke; Feeney 200 IM, 100 breaststroke; Sternad, 50 freestyle. Girls state-qualifying times: 200 medley relay (Erin Stickney, Emily Molina, Haley Felgner and Heidi Olnhausen); 200 free relay (Felgner, Olnhausen, Rachel Cormack and Allie Gasway). Also, Olnhausen placed first in girls diving.
FOOTBALL HONOR ROLL: Coaches nominated standouts from Friday's game, a 13-0 loss at Tift County in the Class AAAAA quarterfinals. Junior LB Eloka Anyaorah, six solo tackles, one assist, two sacks, one QB rush, caused fumble, two tackles for loss; junior DB Marquese Quiles, six solos, one assist, two pass breakups, one tackle for loss; junior DE Darrius Wilborn, two solos, five assists, two tackles for loss; senior LB Jasper Williams, eight solos, one assist, one sack, one tackle for loss; junior FS Jim Moreland, two solos, five assists.
WRESTLING: The Panthers won the Southern Slam this past weekend in Greenville, S.C. Top finishers: First place —- Chad Mitchell (119 pounds), Carson Fields (125), Ryan Galloway (130), and Connor Dalton (171). Second place —- Clint Jones (103), Jason Hail (145), Zac Burger (152), Buddy Stover (160), Charles Sandusky (189), Nandor Csonka (215). Third place —- Kevin McAraw (112), Jesse Miller (140), and Brian Farris (275). The Panthers host Starr's Mill and Redan Wednesday.
WRESTLING: Blake Pennington (171 pounds) and Ben Emerson (189) won their weight classes at the Lamar Ball tournament at Wesleyan School. Other place-winners: Andrew Sartain (103, second); Joey Payne (140, second); Sam Kuntz (160, second); Caleb Pillow (215, second); Matt Chapman (145, third); Momin Ali (112, fourth).
BOYS BASKETBALL: Kevin Anderson, Bryen Pyles and Eddie Brown each scored 19 points as the Lion (5-0) remained unbeaten with a 71-40 win Saturday over Mill Creek. Because of the football team's success and injuries, the Lions have been playing with only eight players.
SWIMMING: The boys placed first and the girls fifth in the Pace Invitational Saturday. Caleb Weir placed first in the boys 100 backstroke, second in the 200 freestyle and was part of the winning 200 medley relay team (with Alex Vess, Jay Collins and Ross Cooper). Callie McQuaig was first in the girls 100 backstroke, third in the 50 freestyle and was on the third-place girls medley relay (with Bailey Miller, Anna Johnston and Sara Lawson). Other place-winners: Joey Kowalewicz, second, boys 500 freestyle; Vess, third, boys 100 breaststroke; Collins, third, boys 50 freestyle; Cooper, Vess, Nathan Brannen and Tim Toll, third, boys 200 freestyle relay; and Alex Allison, Tommy Bonner, Adam Main, Zach Walters, fifth, boys medley relay.
BOYS BASKETBALL: Five players scored in double figures in a 65-33 win over Yeshiva Saturday. Preston Smith scored 15 points to lead the way. Carter Rice added 14 and Harvey Cheek, Wes Hinton and Ryan McClanahan each had 11.
SWIMMING/DIVING: Jacob Tzegeagbe won the 1-meter diving title at the McCallie Invitational in Chattanooga. He is the first Shiloh diver to win first place at the elite meet. Also making it to the finals and scoring were Andrew Carlone, Chris Cruz and Daniel Gould. All of Shiloh's relays also made the finals. Shiloh qualified three relay teams for the state championships. Carlone, Tzegeagbe and Gould along with Cyrus Dobbins and Tommy Cheek helped the boys team make two state cuts and the girls team of Melissa Murgas, Ellyce Anderson, Kerry Murphy and Wendy Hutson made one state cut. Shiloh's next meet is Saturday at Mountain Park Aquatic Center.
GIRLS BASKETBALL: Jessica Baker scored 14 points and had five steals, and Nicole Fifer had 10 points and 10 rebounds in a 52-28 win over Mount Zion Saturday.
BOYS BASKETBALL: The Wolves (5-2) beat Ensworth High School (Nashville) 56-45 as Tanner Smith scored 26 points, then defeated Christ Presbyterian Academy (Nashville) 52-50 behind 22 points from Erik Strong and 16 from Smith.
GIRLS BASKETBALL: The Wolves fell 72-64 to Ensworth despite 24 points from Anne Marie Armstrong and 20 from Sarah Delk. Wesleyan bounced back to beat Christ Presbyterian 80-48 and improve to 4-2. Armstrong scored 25, Delk 16 and Chantel Kennedy 11.
