There were 20 competitors in her weight class. Akuffo had a bye in the first round and then defeated Mariya Orlova of Uzbekistan 5-0. She was eliminated with a loss to Anita Schaetzle from Germany.

Earlier, Akuffo won the Guelph Open, an Italian tournament and the Colorado International Tournament. She finished third in a Swedish tournament, captured the national championship and then what she considers one of her greatest achievements, won gold at the University World Summer Games in Turkey.
