Michael Ryder's second goal of the game 2:10 into overtime gave the Montreal Canadiens a 4-3 win over the New York Rangers in National Hockey League play on Friday at Madison Square Garden.

This time Ryder fired a wrist shot off New York goalie Kevin Weekes to give the Canadiens their second straight win in one of just three games scheduled for the second night of the NHL season.

Ryder's goal was the Canadiens only shot of the overtime period, giving him three goals in the first two games after he missed five pre-season games with a sprained ankle.

Ryder and Christopher Higgins scored six minutes apart for the Canadiens to give Montreal a 2-1 lead, but Martin Rucinsky tied the game at 16:57 to complete the scoring in the opening period.

Montreal rookie Alexander Perezhogin gave the Canadiens the lead again with his goal 6:07 into the second period, and that goal held up until New York's Dominic Moore tied the game with just 2:36 left in regulation time.

In St. Louis, Brendan Shanahan scored the game-winning goal at 18:17 of the second period and Jason Williams had three assists as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Blues 4-3.

Robert Lang, Mikael Samuelsson and Jiri Fischer scored the other goals for Detroit. Manny Legace made 23 saves, as the Red Wings completed a home-and-home series sweep over the Blues after winning 5-1 in Detroit Wednesday.
